What can one do with painters tape? This. I borrowed a little painter’s tape from my friend Susanna. And this laborious work followed.

Additional Instruction

image

Last night I was searching for inspiration for a new artwork, and I googled the word “woman.”

These were my results. As you can see, #Google believes that a “woman” is slender, young, pretty and mostly white. I am a woman that is sometimes slender, sometimes pretty. When I lose my slender and my pretty, how will I fit into the Google definition of woman? Is this a desperate lack of diversity? Or has Google’s data mining gone so far that it thinks it knows what my perceptions of “woman” should be?

Apprentice

image

I set up a makeshift studio in my dining room while my basement was under construction. I put the girls to bed and prepared to let a little creativity loose. I was stuck and had some sort of artist’s block. Then I saw two, tiny, 3-year-old heads peeking through the railing on the stairs. Their eyes alight, they said, “Can we paint with you, Mommy??” It was close to 10 p.m., so I should have said no. But I didn’t. I said yes and they squealed as they joined me at the dining room table.

What came next was a fabulous collaboration where I became the apprentice. I I let them direct me. They picked out the colors and pointed to the place on the canvas where they wanted me to place the paint. Their unexpected choices of color and treatment resulted in this delightful artwork. It’s absolutely one of my favorites.

The original is still available, but I don’t really know if I want to sell it….

Nectar Study

image

This artwork started as a small study for a commissioned piece. I wanted to see how the collage paper works next to purple and pink colors. I also created a custom stamp made from cereal boxes. I use the yellow paint to see how it would hold up on canvas. I I loved the result so much that I upgraded it from a study to an artwork.

Commission for Aubree

image

When I received a commission from Aubree’s boyfriend to paint something featuring Essie nail polish, I wasn’t quite sure how to approach it. He knew she wanted a white background. Otherwise, it was left up to me. I continually struggle with realism, so this was an interesting challenge. It took me forever and had lots of corrections. Most of them from my husband leaning over my shoulder saying, “You know that’s not how paint drips, right? Your representation of gravity is way off.” Once I got my gravity together, I think it came out okay. Most importantly, Aubree loved it 🙂

The Hunt for Gold

image

After Cecil the Lion was killed by a trophy-hunting American dentist, I mourned the loss over bloodlust with the rest of the world. I envisioned the sandy yellows and browns of African plains overrun with blood in the hunt for precious things.

April Bouquet

image

This painting took me a loooong time to finish. Realism isn’t my strong suit, but I was practicing to get better. I painted the red background first and let it sit for a couple of months before I decided what to do with it.

I love yellow roses, especially if they have a little pink in them. I thought it would be striking against red.

This painting is interesting to ne because it is my first Instagram collaboration. I reached out to my Instagram followers and asked for opinions about what I should put at the bottom of the painting since the flowers were feeling a little top heavy.

One of my followers suggested something geometrical and another follower suggested kisses, so that’s what I went with. Again influenced by my daughter, I added the cobalt frame to make it pop. Pop it did.

Blue Frame

image

Some paintings have a deep meaning behind them. This is not one of them. My daughter sat next to me as I look at a blank canvas. She picked a few a colors and I painted a few strokes. I talked it off with a blue frame and called it a day. It sold immediately. Many thanks to my little painting partner 🙂

Original is sold. Prints are available. Contact ee33art@gmail.com with commission requests.

Nevermind your Instruction

image

I was flipping through magazines one day when I was overwhelmingly disgusted by the barrage of images telling me what beautiful is. To qualify as beautiful, you should have flawless skin, be very thin, pouty, full lips and perfect symmetry. Nevermind this instruction.

In the 1920s, Polish artist Tamara de Lempicka introduced us to La Bella Rafaela. She outshines the grotesque modern definition of beauty. I pay tribute to the original art by recreating Rafaela against the backdrop of her lessers.

Unearthed

image

I’ve been really into gold lately. I got my hands on some gold leaf and a stencil to make a nice texture. I went to town. I love the gold against the white. The end product made me think of something emerging. Something earthy. Hence the title.
